Explore Old Town around the St Pierre Cathedral Geneva
The area beneath the Cathedral has recently been excavated extensively, revealing a previously unknown history of the site dating back to the time of the Roman Empire. From the 8th to the 10th centuries it was one of three cathedrals that existed on the site. The present building has grown from a place of worship devoted to ecclesiastical use and an early Christian cult; the other two structures, which amalgamated together in the 12th century by the growth of the surviving building, were apparently for different uses, one for public sacraments and the other for church education.
The architecture of the Cathedral of Saint Pierre has undergone various reconstruction works during the course of its long and interesting history. Its first phase of structural change dates as far back as 1160 and lasted nearly a century. Under the Reformation, it became a Protestant place of worship from 1535.
Discover an amazing archaeological site
The remains of a basilica, mosaic paintings, walls, rooms and flooring from buildings centuries’ old – even dating back to the 4th century - were recently discovered here. Ultimately these historical findings prove the establishments of a city in ancient times where Geneva currently stands.
Visit the museum to learn more about the archaeological site where you can see artefacts and rooms such as the Roman Crypt, Monk’s Cells and several fascinating movies portraying the history of the area.
During your trip here, you can also learn about the largest collection of Gothic and Romanesque artefacts in Switzerland which is housed in the cathedral.
Tower above the city
The effort to climb the 157 steps to the top of the towers is well worth taking the time to do with an amazing panoramic view of the city and Lake Geneva, so remember to bring your camera for a great photo opportunity.
Open year-round, the two tall towers have long spiral staircases to get an unbeatable view of Geneva and its surrounding landscape including the mesmerising Jet d’Eau water fountain on the Lake. The South tower is a little more special as it has an open-air balcony where you can walk around to get the perfect picture. Buy entry tickets from the reception desk inside the souvenir shop. It’s worthwhile noting that the North and South towers are connected at half-height. There is a maze of staircases and narrow routes as the towers connect, however it does make it easy to visit both towers without having to walk down and up the other.
While you are here listen out for the bells of the tower clock as they strike on each hour followed by the play of the glockenspiel – you may even hear the Swiss National anthem. The chimes of the clock are heard throughout the city and are a heart-warming reminder of the city’s heritage and culture.
At the end of your excursion remember to stop by the souvenir shop for a special memento of your trip or a gift for friends and family.
